"Today a warm welcoming Iraqi Lunch was prepared for us. Our new Trainee
Riem wanted to welcome her boss with her national hospitality and the local
flavors of her native kitchen. A beautifully set table, and a wealth of aroma´s
welcomed us in her new home. During the business lunch we discussed not only
the work assignment, we also shared some details about our families, culture
and the way we are going to celebrate the upcoming holidays.
Riem was introduced to me by Wytzia, a great lady with a big hearth for
justice, immigration law and people. She and her professional friend Anton,
another great person whom I only recently met for the first time, both give
their time to `vluchtelingenwerk` and helping political refugees get back into
a professional work. Since I work with Knowledge migrants and other
international professionals who come to Holland for work, I am only familiar
with the other segment of international people via the media.
Until today, by recommendation of Wytzia I had talked to Riem, a young
lawyer from Iraq, who had to run from her country for religious reasons. This
initial talk led to an interview, which led to the internship which led to
signing the contract and the special luncheon today. Both Riem and we are very
happy to work the next 6 months together. We will learn about the challenges
people endure when they move to our country as refugees. She will learn about
the other option to move to our country, the easy road as a highly skilled
migrant.
As people we will all learn. I want to thank the people who gave me the
opportunity to meet people like Riem. I want to thank Riem for giving her
enthusiasm and intelligence to our company. Esp. now, just before the Christmas
holiday, I realize how blessed we are. Hearing Riem´s story, seeing her strength
and drive to make it in her new home country gives me the strength to continue,
even when I have hard times. Just wanted to share this story with all of you,
by simply opening your mind and office doors to a person who does not fit the
regular process, I am sure it will make your life so much richer.
I am truly thankful for today. It was a unique contract signing moment.
