VACATURE: Researcher and Editor Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM)

The Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM) is an ethnic Mon organization that works for the restoration of democracy, human rights, and genuine peace in Burma. Since our founding by students from the 1988 pro-democracy uprising, political activists, and community leaders, HURFOM’s staff has monitored and reported on the ongoing commission of crimes against humanity by the Burmese military in ethnic Mon territory and areas throughout southern Burma. This information is shared with campaign organizations, international media, and governments working to bring democratic change to Burma. Position Summery:

The senior researcher and editor position entails working with director, coordinator, and writers to implement HURFOM’s research goals through conducting secondary research for publications, shaping research strategy, developing HURFOMs message, and editing English language documents.

The position will require a 1 year commitment minimum, with opportunity to extend the position the following year. Position is open untill filled.

Main Responsibilities:

• Provide necessary research for situation briefs, monthly publications, and additional documents to provide strong context and understanding of situation on which to build clear message.

• Constantly monitor, research, and analyze human rights and Burma related developments in order to provide informed, accurate, and timely analysis to project documents.

• Oversee the editing, format, and message development for English language publications.

• Build the capacity of Mon staff, in effective writing and communication skills, research techniques, analysis, through on-the-job training, periodic capacity reviews and other activities or trainings as needed.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with coordinator and writing staff on the message and goals of situation briefs, monthly publications and additional documents, as well as longer term strategy for HURFOM research goals.

• Develop and maintain research related connections amongst border based and international actors for the purpose of promoting HURFOM’s findings as well as expanding research capacity and developing joint projects.

Required Experience:

• Knowledge or experience in Burma human rights issues, particularly in relationship to the situation in eastern and southern Burma.

• Knowledge of human rights standards, legal mechanisms, ongoing develop practices in Burma, and familiarity with current situation and debate relating to Burma’s political situation, issues of crimes against humanity, labor and trafficking issues, and land rights.

• Experience conducting and editing research reports in human rights related issues in Burma or other parts of Southeast Asia.

• Experience working Burmese or ethnic minority groups, displaced persons, or groups that face persecution.

• Undergraduate or graduate degrees relating to Southeast Asian studies, human rights, peace and conflict resolution, law, international relations, or journalism would be ideal.

Required Skills:

• Strong written and oral communication skills, ideally a native English speaker.

• Ideally, some language skills in Mon, Burmese, Karen, or Thai.

• Experience using Microsoft words, email software, Skype. Additional software expertise in design and layout programs a bonus.

• Proven ability to communicate across diverse cultural backgrounds, and respect and appreciation for Burmese or ethnic minority culture.

• Self-motivated, self-disciplined, well organized, and able to function under pressure and handle numerous tasks simultaneously.
